Josh Fotheringham Talks About Why Our Oral Surgeons Are The Most Qualified To Place Your Dental Implants
The Benefits of Seeing a Skilled Oral Surgeon
Oral surgeons complete an additional four to six years of hospital-based training alongside medical residents after dental school. During residency, they receive extensive training in related medical and surgical disciplines such as general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, critical care medicine, anesthesia and pathology. They have advanced training and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries and defects impacting functional and aesthetic aspects of soft and hard tissues of the mouth.
Oral surgeons focus on performing dental surgical procedures, including simple and complicated teeth extractions (including wisdom teeth), dental implant placement, repair of broken jaw and facial bones, removal of jaw cysts and tumors, soft tissue biopsies, jaw realignment surgery to correct bite discrepancies, temporomandibular joint surgery and cosmetic surgery.
In addition, oral surgeons are uniquely trained and qualified to offer patients a variety of anesthesia options right in the office, including IV sedation and general anesthesia.
Oral Surgeons are Highly Skilled Implant Surgeons
Although some general dentists offer dental implant placement, most don’t perform this procedure on a regular basis. Expertise, skills and implant technologies vary greatly from practice to practice. When shortcuts are taken, the repercussions can be serious, including painful nerve damage, persistent infection and even implant failure.
A 2014 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association suggested that dental implant survival and success rates in oral surgery practices are higher than the same procedures performed by general dentists. That isn’t surprising because oral surgeons place dental implants nearly every day and routinely perform related pre-prosthetic procedures such as tooth extractions and bone grafting. Dental implant placement requires the bone be as close to its original dimension and position as possible for optimal results.
Due to their in-depth familiarity with the bones of the jaw and more extensive experience, oral surgeons are highly skilled implant surgeons. They’re better able to accurately assess the likelihood of long-term success of dental implants and determine if a bone graft is needed to help make a patient a better candidate for dental implants.

The Proof Is In Our Patients
Specialized Training in Dental Implantology
With years of specialized training, experience and clinical results to back up treatments, our implant surgeons offer single dental implants, implant supported dentures and full mouth dental implants, including All-on-4® and All-on-X. This streamlined implant protocol enables patients with some bone loss to get a temporary full mouth prosthesis the same day as surgery, often without bone grafting.
Our team also offers zygomatic dental implants that are surgically placed in the zygomatic (cheek) bone, also without the need for bone grafting. Anchoring longer implants in the zygomatic bone enables patients with extensive bone loss in their maxillary (upper) jaw to restore their smiles with immediate-load options.
